Qitaihe

Qitaihe is a prefecture-level city in Heilongjiang province of the People's Republic of China. It has an area of 6,221 square kilometers and a population of 890,000.

Coal mining is an important industry. Other major cities with coal mining within the province include Hegang.

Qitaihe began its development when mining started in 1958.

Toxic leak in benzene factory

A benzene plant situated upstream in the city of along the Songhua river exploded on 13 November 2005. Benzene levels reached more than 100 times normal levels, which led authorities in Harbin to shut off the water supply, and some residents left the city while others rushed to buy bottled water. After a few days the water supply was restored. The Harbin government originally declared to the public that the water supply was temporarily off while the supply system was checked. They also denied reports of a chemical leak, claiming that was "just a rumour."

Hulin

Hulin is a city on Muling River with a population of around 200,000 in Heilongjiang province, China. It is known as a city with a beautiful environment featuring the Wusuli River that borders Russia. It contains forests and fertile black-colored soil. Its main agricultural products include soybeans, cattle, milk, various organic produces, and lumber.

Heihe

Heihe is a city in Heilongjiang, China.

It is located at , on the Russian border, on the south bank of the Amur River, across the river from the Russian city of Blagoveshchensk. Heihe has a population of about 113,000.

Today Heihe, which forms a free-trade zone with Blagoveshchensk, is a major centre of Sino-Russian trade. Many Russians and Chinese take advantage of Visa-free travel between the cities, which has spurred large unofficial trade between China and Russia. Some inhabitants of Blagoveshchensk have purchased apartments on the Chinese side, as living costs are much lower.

Transportation between Blagoveshchensk and Heihe is by boat in the summer and by bus over the frozen river in the winter; when the ice is too weak to carry buses, the route is operated by hovercrafts.
